In the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, we at the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA) are deeply grateful for the swift and selfless actions taken by our members.
Veterinarians from across our state stepped up to provide shelter and care for pets traveling out of the cone of danger. Over 50 veterinary hospitals volunteered to help, working closely with the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) to facilitate emergency boarding and stabling for displaced animals.
Our Colleague Assistance Needed (CAN) Program also saw incredible support, with many members stepping up to aid Dr. Basil Sharp in North Carolina, demonstrating the compassion and resilience within our veterinary community. We’re also incredibly grateful to Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which responded rapidly to the relief efforts by supplying over 30,000 pounds of pet food within 10 days of Hurricane Helene’s impact on Georgia.
Staying Connected: Cell Numbers Make a Difference
One of the most valuable insights from the latest storms was the importance of having direct contact information for each of our members. With power outages affecting much of East Georgia, reaching veterinary hospitals by email or landline was often impossible. Being able to contact you directly by cell phone was essential in assessing operational capacities and coordinating immediate support with the GDA. To ensure smoother communication in future emergencies, please ensure you update your cell phone information in your member profile. This simple step helps us respond quickly to future natural disasters and prioritize areas with the greatest needs.
Share Your Stories with Us
The power of community truly shines in times of need. If you have a story of how your hospital supported neighbors during these storms, we encourage you to share it with us at gvma_can@gvma.net. Each story inspires others and highlights the exceptional dedication of our veterinary professionals.
