Veterinary Workplace Stress: Mindfulness-Based Methodologies for Coping and Recovery

Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • The role of the autonomic nervous system in stress responding and recovery
  • Attributes of the mammalian stress response pertinent to stress responding and recovery
  • The relationship between perception and stress
  • How the human attentional system works
  • What mindfulness is and what it is not
  • Evidence supporting mindfulness as a methodology for improving stress resilience
  • The role of meditation practices in the cultivation of attentional skills and stress resilience

GVMA LEAP CE is free to GVMA Members.

Non-members are required to pay a $300 registration fee.

Support staff with a GVMA members in their practice may register at $150.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Laura Smallwood, DVM, DACVIM-SAIM, RYT-200
Dr. Laura Smallwood’s veterinary experience includes 36 years in the practice of veterinary medicine, the majority of that as a small animal internal medicine specialist and practice owner. She began her training to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction with the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School and has continued training under the mentorship of former CFM teachers and East Coast Mindfulness founders Rebecca Eldridge and Margaret Fletcher. Dr. Smallwood is qualified to teach MBSR both in-person and online. In addition to teaching MBSR, Laura teaches mindfulness courses adapted to the workplace.
Dr. Smallwood has lectured and taught workshops on mindfulness for the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Thrive Veterinary Health, Royal Canin, and Emerald Coast Veterinary Conference, and she is a regular guest on the Cairn Veterinary Podcast. She is the owner of Atlanta Mindfulness and on faculty at East Coast Mindfulness . She is also a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. She currently serves as the chair of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association Wellness Committee, as the veterinary representative to the Georgia Professional Health Program board, and on the Atlanta Insight Meditation Community board of directors.
