MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
JASON SOUKUP, DVM, DAVDC
Dr. Soukup is a Clinical Professor in Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his DVM from Texas A&M University in 2002. After completing an internship, he spent three years in general practice before pursuing advanced training in dentistry and oromaxillofacial surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was board-certified by the American Veterinary Dental College in 2009 and became a Founding Fellow-AVDC Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2018. He serves as section head of the Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery service. His clinical and research interests are in the areas of dental and maxillofacial biomechanics, oral surgical oncology and computer-aided surgical planning/virtual surgery and 3D printing. He is also currently pursuing a PhD in biomechanics and enjoys running in his free time.

- Systematic Approach to Managing Chronic Periodontal Disease in Dogs
- The role of scaling and root planing as the foundation of periodontal therapy will be discussed. The concepts and the practical implementation of host-modulation therapy will be described. The role of periodontal surgery in select patients will be explored.
8:50 a.m. – 9:40 a.m.
- Recognition and Treatment of Traumatic Dentoalveolar Injuries
- The classification of common traumatic dentoalveolar injuries will be described in order to aid rapid diagnosis. The current epidemiology of these injuries will be reviewed. Concepts of emergency and non-emergency treatment will be discussed.
10:00 a.m. – 10:50 a.m.
- Flap Design for Dental Extractions and Periodontal Surgery
- The surgical approach to most extractions and periodontal procedures begin with a gingival flap. In this presentation we will review flap design options and provide tips to help the general practitioner choose the best approach.
10:50 a.m. – 11:40 a.m.
- Dental Extraction Principles
- Learn the principles required to properly extract major (and minor) teeth using tried-and-true techniques. The focus of this presentation will be on adequate bone removal/exposure, sectioning techniques, elevation principles, alveoloplasty and tension-free closure.
11:40 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. LUNCH BREAK

- Tips and Pitfalls of Challenging Extractions and Their Complications
- We all have our problem teeth! Many textbooks and presentations only review relatively straight-forward approaches to the canine tooth but that doesn’t quite cover the really difficult ones. In this presentation we will review alternative approaches to the mandibular canine tooth, tips to avoid jaw fractures and how to deal with closure of maxillary molar sites – just to name a few. We will also look at how to deal with some of the common complications.
