MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Ryan Cheek, RVTg, VTS(ECC)

Ryan was part of the first graduating class of the Veterinary Technology department at GTC. Upon graduation he spent time working at Zoo Atlanta and in an exotic animal practice. However, it was emergency/critical care where Ryan found his passion and has worked for 24 years while also being in the educational side of veterinary technology. Ryan became a registered veterinary technician in 1999 and earned his Veterinary Technician Specialty in Emergency/Critical Care in 2005. He also holds a BAS in Veterinary Technology-Clinical Medicine and a MS and PhD in Instructional Technology. He is certified in basic and advanced veterinary life support as well as being a certified BLS/ALS instructor. Ryan was an Instructor and Program Director for the Veterinary Technology Program and currently serves as the Division Chair for Health Sciences. Ryan is a member of NAVTA, GVTAA, VECCS, and ACVECCTN. He served on the Executive Board of the GVTAA for 10 years and currently serves as a mentor to veterinary technicians wanting to achieve diplomat status in AVECCTN. Learn More About Ryan.


SCHEDULE

9:00am – 9:30am: Check-in
9:30am – 11:10am:

  • In this 2 hour segment, we will discuss basic and advanced life support going through each step of the RECOVER Initiative guidelines on veterinary CPR. In basic life support, we will discuss how to properly assess the patient, when to initiate CPR, and how to perform chest compressions and ventilate the patient. Transitioning into advanced life support, we will discuss when to use and what drugs to use, when and how to defibrillate, and monitoring the effectiveness of the efforts. Lastly, we will answer a few common questions such as how long to perform CPR and when CPR should not be initiate among others.

11:10am – 12:00pm: Lunch
12:00pm – 4:00pm:

  • Using simulation devices, we will work in teams and run a code. After each code, a discussion will take place that will focus on teamwork, communication, application of skills, and an overall case discussion.
