The evening’s awards program recognized individuals whose contributions have created lasting impacts on veterinary medicine, animal welfare, and public health in Georgia.

President’s Award: Dr. Jill Lancaster

Dr. Jackie Luckstone presented the President’s Award—one of GVMA’s highest honors—to Dr. Jill Lancaster. This distinguished recognition celebrates exceptional service that goes above and beyond ordinary expectations.

Dr. Lancaster’s outstanding committee work, exemplary mentorship of fellow members, and transformative initiatives have substantially benefited the association. Her leadership embodies the dedication and vision that strengthens the entire veterinary community.

Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Christine Murray

Dr. Christine Murray received the Distinguished Service Award for her significant and measurable contributions to the profession. This honor recognizes individuals who demonstrate unwavering dedication and selfless service, regardless of formal titles or board positions.

Through volunteer work, innovative initiatives, and meaningful mentorship, Dr. Murray has strengthened the foundation of veterinary medicine across the state.

Legislative Champions

GVMA also honored two legislators whose advocacy has transformed veterinary practice and expanded access to care throughout Georgia.

Representative David Huddleston was recognized for his pivotal role in transforming Georgia’s veterinary loan repayment program for food animal veterinarians. His legislative leadership created a comprehensive three-year program with strategic rural placement incentives. The enhanced program now rivals the USDA’s national program, giving Georgia a powerful recruitment tool to attract veterinarians to rural communities where they’re needed most.

Senator Jason Anavitarte received recognition for championing groundbreaking legislation that has modernized veterinary care delivery. His achievements include establishing hospital-based Veterinary Client Patient Relationships and developing comprehensive guidelines for veterinary telehealth services. These innovations address critical access gaps and provide solutions for underserved rural areas, ensuring geographic barriers no longer prevent Georgians from accessing essential veterinary care.

Legacy President’s Award: Dr. Duffy Jones

The Legacy President’s Award honors former presidents whose transformative leadership continues to resonate throughout the profession. This year’s recipient, Dr. Duffy Jones, exemplifies visionary leadership that extends far beyond a formal term of office. The award recognizes those exceptional individuals who continue championing GVMA’s values and mission, serving as enduring pillars of the professional community.

Looking Ahead

As we express gratitude to Dr. Luckstone for her exceptional leadership this past year, we look forward with confidence and enthusiasm to the vision Dr. Strickland and the new leadership team will bring to GVMA.

The 2025 Annual Business Meeting demonstrated what makes this association strong: dedicated professionals, legislative champions who understand the vital role veterinarians play in protecting animal and public health, and a shared commitment to advancing the profession for generations to come.

The future of veterinary medicine in Georgia is bright.
